This Sunday is Second Sunday in Broadway-Fillmore and it is all about the Pierogi

This coming Sunday is Second Sunday in the Broadway-Fillmore neighborhood.

Second Sundays is an initiative started by Broadway Fillmore Alive to encourage people to attend Mass at one of the neighborhood’s historic churches every second Sunday of the month during the course of the year.  It is a great way to check out one of these churches and support them.

For March, we are featuring Saint John Kanty Church.  We chose the church this month because they are in the middle of their annual Lenten pierogi fundraiser.

Think about it…come to church at Saint John Kanty, buy some pierogi…it doesn’t get much better than that.

Here is Saint John Kanty’s website—>

All of the churches in Buffalo’s historic Polonia are architectural and spiritual treasures.

Let’s help keep them ALIVE!

Here is a short video showing the good people at Saint John Kanty making the pierogi.

Video: Making Pierogi at Saint John Kanty Church Buffalo

Each year the parishioners of Saint John Kanty Church get together before lent and make pierogi to sell to the community and parish as a fundraiser for the church…last year they made 5000.  That’s a lot of pierogi.

I caught a little bit of the process yesterday.

Being a Kanty’s kid, it is always great going back to the church and yesterday was special.  Any time in you get in a kitchen with Polish ladies, you can’t help to feel like they are welcoming you like you are part of their big extended family.

One thing that kept coming back to me while I was at Kanty’s yesterday and later reflecting on the experience when piecing together the video was that these people and many like them are at the core of what keeps churches like Saint John Kanty alive.  You will never see their names in the paper or their faces on TV news bragging about what they do.   They go about their business working together to preserve this place they believe in.  It is when I meet people like I did at Kanty’s yesterday that is motivating and inspiring to me.

Video & Photos: Polka, Piwo, and Pierogi @ the Broadway Market – 01/21/2012

I love it when things I do in the neighborhood turn out great. Such was the case with the Polka, Piwo, and Pierogi event at the Broadway Market on Saturday. It also served as a reminder to me as to what the Market can be year round. This treasure of ours over here in B-F needs to be an ethnic food magnet for all of WNY.

Poles in the New World Book Signing at the Broadway Market Saturday as part of Polka, Piwo, & Pierogi

Author Edward Zawadzki will be signing his book “Poles in the New World” at the Broadway Market on 01/21/2012 from 11am to 2pm as part of Polka, Piwo, & Pierogi event at the market.

From the author’s website…

“The Poles in the New World” has from the start been a project from my heart and to see it keep growing in popularity has made me so proud! I’m getting new bookings almost daily to visit so many strong regions of Polonia right across North America. This book highlights the lives of 50 Poles of distinction and their great contributions to North American society. From Pulaski, Brzezinski to Martha Stewart and Steve Wozniak, Poles have given so much of themselves to the building of our North American society.

FOURTH ANNUAL BUFFALO’S BEST PIEROGI CONTEST: My Judging Experience

On July 18, I received an email asking me to be a judge in the Corpus Christi 4th Annual Pierogi Contest. You would have thought that I was given a million dollars with how excited I got. Not only would it be an extraordinary experience, but I’d also get to eat pierogis! I immediately added the event to my Google calendar, but I knew that the date would be permanently engraved in my noggin!

Waiting for today was like being 5 years old again waiting for Christmas day to arrive… but, it came. I made sure that I ate very lightly and left early enough to get there with out any conflicts. Oh, and by the way, I had my wisdom teeth removed on Tuesday. The doctor wanted to schedule it for yesterday, but I refused, as I had a big event that I could not miss.

Upon entering the Dozynki Festival, the happiness was contagious! People were laughing, eating, drinking, and dancing! I was very familiar with Polish music, as I grew up around it. I registered, participated in the Chinese Auction, and sat down anxiously waiting for the contest to commence. There were about 12 judges, including myself, all of which are Buffalo-centric and active in in the community in some way. I believe that they were all just as excited as I was. I got the wonderful pleasure of sitting across from Ben Siegel. Ben is an editor and designer for the Block Club magazine and he also works to help small businesses with design, marketing, web, and social media needs.

FOURTH ANNUAL BUFFALO’S BEST PIEROGI CONTEST

FOURTH ANNUAL BUFFALO’S BEST PIEROGI CONTEST

Contest Celebrates Buffalo’s Ethnic Heritage

Buffalo, New York – Corpus Christi Church is looking for Buffalo’s best pierogi by hosting its fourth annual Buffalo’s Best Pierogi contest on Saturday August 20 at 4:30p.m.  The contest is open to all amateur cooks and businesses.

The contest has grown from fourteen contestants to last year’s high of thirty-five. Christopher Byrd the contest organizer says the event “captures Buffalo’s love for food while celebrating our city’s rich ethnic heritage with recipes and traditions passed on from one generation to the next.”

Applicants will be judged in one of three categories:

Homemade Traditional – boiled or fried pierogi filled with cheese, cheese/potato or kapusta (pickled or fresh cabbage) with or without mushrooms, carrots, etc.

Homemade Non-Traditional – open to entrant’s creativity, keeping in mind that a pierog is a stuffed pocket of dough.

Commercial – open to any business using a traditional recipe.

Deadline for entries is Saturday, August 13.

A group of celebrity judges will determine the winners for the contest.  Winners in each category will walk away with the title of Buffalo’s Best Pierogi Maker.

The contest will take place during Corpus Christi’s 32nd annual Dozynki (pronounced Do-ZHIN-kee) Polish Harvest Festival on August 19, 20 and 22. This joyful commemoration, which dates to the middle ages, is the Polish equivalent of America’s Thanksgiving holiday.

Corpus Christi Church is located at 199 Clark St. in Buffalo, one block east of the Broadway Market in the heart of Buffalo’s Historic Polonia. Applications for the pierogi contest and a complete listing of Harvest Festival events can be found on the church website at http://dozynki.corpuschristibuffalo.org.
