When I got home from the Broadway Market yesterday, I had a bunch of messages on my phone from my mother, aunt and brothers.

I called my mom back and learned that my Babcia had passed away.

I don’t really get into the personal side of my life here on BFA, but for my grandmother I will.

She is a big reason why I do the things I do in B-F.  Until she passed, she lived in the same house she did next door to my childhood home in the neighborhood for 60+ years.  She always helped people. Grandma always believed in the neighborhood and always scoffed at any notion of moving out. Well into her late 80s she was active in a block club.  She inspired me to get involved with places like the Broadway Market, Corpus Christi Church, etc. because they are living history and part of the legacy of not only her, but the countless people like her who helped build the neighborhood…it is important to honor the humble lives of these people and to keep their legacy ALIVE.

I share the same birthday with her…it was a special bond we had.

There are no words to describe the thoughts of life without her…I already miss her dearly…in world where we idolize people for all the wrong reasons, my grandmother was/is my hero.

Rest in peace…I know God has a special place for you.

  1. Chris… I’m very sad for your loss. You and your family are in my prayers. My grandmother, 92, still lives on the Eastside…I was proud to bring her to the Market on Sat. As long as we keep what we are going….the memories of our families will always endure. Like you…my love of BF started with my Grandmother…..

  2. Chris – I’m sorry for your loss. My prayers go out to you and your family. I remember your grandmother fondly from the days in the old neighborhood and delivering the newspaper.

  3. Chris my thoughts and prayers are truly with you at this time, along with the rest of BFA’s readers and friends.

Eternal rest grant unto her O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May her soul and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

  4. Chris,

Advent is a time of journey. The Church journies toward the Lord, clebrating his coming in time and at the end of time. For your Babcia, the ultimate journey began as the church began the vigil of our communal journey.

Like you, my Babcia is the reason for my care of Corpus Christi and BF. Roots are what give us meaning. Love known and shared gives us reason to continue on the journey until our ultimate journey to the Father’s house.

For Babcia, “life is changed, not ended.” Would that we could understand the change she now enjoys!

You and your family are in my prayers.

    Stan

  5. I just found this post regarding your grandmother…what a beautiful tribute to a wonderful lady. I remember the hours and hours I would spend at her house. It was my second home for many years. Like my Mother she stayed in the same family home (right around the corner) for almost 60 years…never wanting to leave because it was her “neighborhood” and her “home.” My personal thank you to you for sharing this wonderful lady and all the memories she created for me.
