Broadway-Fillmore Neighborhood Housing Services (BFNHS) is now accepting applications to rent one or two bedroom apartments at the Cigar Factory located at 595 Fillmore Ave.
595 Fillmore was saved from the wrecking ball after BFNHS stepped in to save the building by purchasing it in 2015. To further complicate the save, the front portion of the former Jankowski Cigar Shop was hit by a devastating fire a month later. The front had to be demolished, but a back brick and wood portion of the building was saved.
Undeterred by the fire, Stephen Karnath, the BFNHS executive director, developed a plan to rebuild on the site. Working with the engineering and interior design firm Carmina Wood Morris, BFNHS quickly developed plans to rebuild on the site. The plan included reusing the saved back part of building and constructing a new build on the footprint of where the lost front part was demolished. The new build was designed to look like the original.
Construction work began in 2019 on the property and was completed in 2021. The Cigar Factory is now ready to accept residents. In what could have been a loss for the Broadway-Fillmore neighborhood, is now a win. The building is fantastic.
