Why no Sunday or Evening hours @ the Market?

bm.jpg

I have thought about this before, but this past Sunday morning I was reminded when someone asked me at CC if the Market’s bakeries are open on Sunday.

The answer is no of course, but why?

I have also thought about evenings in the past.  The Market should consider opening up on Sundays.  Think about the influx of visitors to the neighborhood for Sunday masses alone and it makes sense.  You have a built in audience….heck you could even work out some sort of deal with the churches. The Market isn’t entirely closed on Sundays as Save-A-Lot is open 9-5 already.

For evenings, if opening late every evening isn’t an option, why not have two days a week stay open late.

I don’t recall the exact study I saw, but Broadway is one of the most traveled routes out of the city in the evening.  Having the Market close at 5 pm on weeknights during the height of rush hour doesn’t make sense.  Again, Save-A-Lot is open to 7 pm Monday through Saturday already.  Staying open later a couple nights a week would also be good for neighborhood residents and people who may want to come down from other parts of WNY.

In this day and age, work and home schedules are crazy and diverese…offering a more flexibility to the hours the Market is open seems like it could be a win win for everyone.  It is not a 9 to 5 world anymore.

What do you think?

  1. I no longer live in the area, but I have family that does and keeping the market open later would invite criminals to do their thing. I could see staying open ’til 7pm in the summer when it is still light out, but once it is dark, you are asking for serious trouble by staying open. As much as I loved the area – it is reality check time here. Keep the patrons and the employees safe by closing before dark.

  2. Mr. Kozlowski,

I live in the neighborhhod and would like to see it stay open to at least 7. Is there crime in the neighborhhod sure. But there is crime everywhere. There are a lot of businesses in the neighborhood that stay open long after sundown and don’t seem to attract what you suggest. I think what Mr. Byrd is suggesting is that the Market look at ways to make shopping at it more accessible for the community and WNY’rs.

  3. @Mike and S. Wilson

The key here is looking for ways to help the Market attract more business which could have a ripple effect for B-F.

  4. The Market needs to keep slightly longer hours. Even if every business just stayed open until 6 PM people would have a chance to pick up dinner on their way home from work. When I had my business in the market the biggest complaint was that customers couldn’t stop on the way home from work or school. Parkside Pharmacy, Rainbow, Rent a Center, Athletes Foot, Rite Aid , Vibe, Hot Spot, and other businesses stay open until 6 PM. Most people/ families shop on Sundays now. The market could stay open a half day on Sunday, and be closed on Monday and Tuesday. Most of the vendors close on Monday anyway.

  5. 6PM would be a nice compromise. I would personally shop at the market more often if it was open longer hours. Right now, it’s simply inconvenient to shop there as it isn’t really on my regular route of travel and its only open when I’m at work. It takes an extra special effort to get there.

  6. Most people who work downtown work 9 to5 and with the market being in such close proximity to downtown I think it would be beneficial to keep it open until 6pm.

  7. Just another example of The Broadway Market missing the boat with a lot of opportunities. These are the same yo yos who blew the backing of Congresswoman Slaughter a couple years ago because they thought they knew better.

Of course changing their hours makes sense, but I have a feeling common sense isn’t whats involved with running the place.

  8. Yes, they should stay open past 5 and for a few hours on Sundays. The current hours are pretty impractical for anyone who works. I can only get there a couple times a month and would probably go a couple times a week if they were open longer. They should have changed the hours years ago. Like the previous post says, they really are missing the boat.

  9. Crime is everywhere, there’s no escaping it. If it’s going to happen, it’s going to happen. I am no more afraid of the East Side than I am of other areas around Buffalo (and the surrounding suburbs).
I, too, am a resident of this neighborhood. When I worked part time, I shopped at the Market on a daily basis on my way home from work. Working full time, downtown, I am only able to shop there on Saturdays and only if I have a chance.
I’d love to see “my” bank move in where Key was and later Market hours. If that was ever to happen, I’d be able to totally eliminate my Tuesday evening shopping at TOPS!
Until then, and unfortunately, TOPS has most of my business 🙁 It’s the hours/convenience factor though. I’d MUCH MUCH MUCH rather shop at the Market.
