(By Jeannine M. Pitas – My View…Buffalo News) A few years ago, my parents decided to host a Brazilian exchange student for six months. Beautiful, intelligent, glamorous and confident, 16-year-old Juliana astounded us with her worldly sophistication. Visiting Niagara Falls, sledding at Chestnut Ridge Park and playing with our neighbors’ children, she approached each new experience with relish.
One day, seeking to give her an honest picture of our country, we took her to visit St. Luke’s Mission on Buffalo’s East Side. As we drove past boarded-up houses and garbage- strewn lawns, Juliana began to get uncomfortable with this view of American life that she had not seen in Hollywood films.
