Friday saw Chris (me) helping clean my grandmother’s house in B-F helping prepare for Easter…I have celebrated Easter at her home every year of my life.
Good Polish grandsons need to earn as many brownie points with the man upstairs to make up for the not so good moments in said Polish grandsons lives.
Cleaning grandma’s house is an interesting endeavor to say the least. I have been doing it for her for about the last 20 years…3 to 4 four times a year. She still likes it cleaned the old fashioned way…hands and knees scrubbing her floor amongst other things…who I am to introduce the “Swiffer” into her life…she finds such modern things as not so good in truly cleaning a home…she is 90.
I wrote about this before, but my grandmother is one my inspirations in getting involved in B-F…we all have people we look up to in life or we classify as heroes…my grandmother is my hero. She was active in the neighborhood until her late 80s…helped people (me included)…helped keep the neighborhood alive…if I am half the person she is when I am 60, I will be blessed.
While their I got into a discussion with her and my aunt about an interesting part of my families B-F past which includes Mayor Mruk as part of family lore…for a time he was raised in my grandmother’s home.
My aunt is going to dig up article about him that relates to it. If she finds, I will post here. I must admit I question the claim a bit because from what I have read about the Honorable Joseph Mruk is that he lived on Broadway for his entire life.
Another cool thing that I have been wanting to take some pictures of and did are the leaded glass windows in front of my grandma’s house…they are beautiful. (see above picture)
I just discovered my Great-grandfather purchased the ring he gave to my Great Grandmother was from Mr. Mruk’s jewelry store. Any idea what address on Broadway his store was located?? Any old images/articles that you know of that highlight him? Please contact me! Dave.Riffel@gmail.com
