BUFFALO NEWS: Buffalo should invest in Broadway Market

Council Member Joseph Golombek thinks the City of Buffalo should use money allocated to the proposed Bass Pro project to make a seasonal public market in the old DL&W terminal. We’d like to remind him of a forgotten part of our city: the Broadway Market. It’s a building already owned by the city; managed by an all-volunteer board of directors, with minimal assistance from the city and none from Erie County.

If Golombek wants to promote a public market, invest in an institution that’s been in Buffalo for almost 120 years. It’s only a mile from downtown; shuttles can be run from downtown to the Broadway Market for convenience. Any money that would be used to rehab the terminal could repair and restore the Broadway Market and add to the security force it already has. The Broadway Market is open year round and is already a mecca for people at Easter time.

The Broadway Area Business Association has already joined with the Broadway Market to promote the Broadway Market Village as a shopping destination. Golombek’s plan will not enhance Buffalo as much as it undermines a community that could be restored with a little well-placed funding.
