A Challenge to the Preservationists

Judge Wolfgang’s recent ruling in favor of the demolition of the Atwater House has stirred up my fellow preservationists again.

And I’m more than just a little frustrated and annoyed with the whole thing.

I have a 2004 Broadway Fillmore Historical Resource Survey that identifies 479 historically or architecturally important commercial, religious and residential structures in the district. Since it was published, uncounted numbers of these structures, mainly houses, have been lost to the wrecking ball.

There were no protestors and no controversy surrounding these demolitions. And there are only a few of us on the east side who are standing up and trying to bring hundreds of other endangered structures into the public eye.

Where are all the placards, preservationist pleas, and protests in Broadway Fillmore?
