While I was flipping through some old newspapers, I know…my life is very exciting, I found a Donn Esmonde column from 1990 on the Broadway Market.
You may not remember, but before K-Mart finally ended up on the old Sattlers site at 998 Broadway, there was a plan to put a plaza in at the location featuring a Bells.
We all know what happened to K-Mart.
As I get older, years like 1990 doesn’t seem that long ago, but in reality it has been almost 17 years…I digress.

AH YOW AH yow ah yow. That’s what my grandmother, rest her soul, used to say. Whenever one of us fell and smack d our head, or her apple strudel didn’t come out quite right, or a family crisis was unearthed, Grandma would shake her head and repeat her Old World mantra.
I thought about Grandma the other day after stopping by the Broadway Market.
A lot of the people there remind me of her and the old neighborhood in Ridge-wood, N.Y.
That was a German neighborhood, and the market is mostly Polish. But the market has the same sort of Central European feeling, and the people look a lot like those in Ridgewood. Some of the elderly women wear cloth coats and kerchiefs; a lot of the men are in hats
