Preservationists say an early 20th century grain elevator destroyed by fire Sunday is another case of demolition by neglect.

The Wollenberg Grain and Seed elevator, 131 Goodyear Ave. near Koons Avenue on Buffalo’s East Side, was the last example of a wooden elevator in Buffalo, and one of two local elevators named to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.

The Wollenberg was built in 1912 in part from wood salvaged from the Kellogg A elevator, a 19th century structure that had operated in Buffalo Harbor. The city-owned property deteriorated significantly after being abandoned in 1987.

The fire, which began Sunday night, was believed to be the result of arson. The remnants of the elevator were torn down Monday after an emergency demolition was ordered.
