Buffalo News: Copper thieves strike again on East Side

Copper thieves have struck yet another East Side property, removing pipes from the walls of a home at 388 Gibson St.

A Williamsville man who owns the East Side rental property told Buffalo police he discovered the break-in Saturday, but said the incident could have occurred as long as a month ago. The intruder broke into the home through a rear window and removed all the copper pipes from the walls that serviced a first floor apartment. Upstairs tenants apparently heard noises at one point, but did not call police.

Rising copper prices have spurred some street-level thieves to steal anything made of the metal, including gutters, pipes and flashing. Over a one-year period through early spring, there were more than 80 reports of copper theft in the city. The number of incidents has risen in recent months.  (read original)
