From Buffalo Bike Tours on John Young:

John Young’s Wings N’ Things was Buffalo’s first full-time chicken wing shop, opened in 1961. Originally located at Jefferson and Carlton, Young moved to Jefferson and Utica, where he became a cornerstone of Buffalo’s bustling East Side community, often visited by celebrities including Cookie Gilchrist, Rick James, and Joe Tex. Notably, Young’s wings were served whole and were covered in his secret mumbo sauce, described as “lip smacking and liver quivering”.

In 1970, Young closed his business shortly after race riots, and moved to Decatur, IL. Upon returning to Buffalo, he discovered he had been largely omitted from official city narratives, noting, “It hurts me so bad that other people take the credit”.

Buffalo Bike Tours and the Young Family are raising funds to create mural honoring John Young. Proceeds from the Mumbo Wing pop up will go to this effort.

More from Buffalo Bike Tours:

The Young Family and Buffalo Bike Tours are currently seeking community support to honor the memory of John Young at the site of his first restaurant on Jefferson Avenue. With funding from the GoFundMe drive, we will reclaim John Young’s rightful place in Buffalo history. All funds will be used to commission a remembrance to Buffalo’s pioneering Chicken Wing King.

This is event is great opportunity to taste a part of Buffalo’s history. Young’s daughter Lina Brown Young will be preparing his original recipe.
