Photos: St. John Kanty’s 125th Anniversary Opening Mass

I don’t have a lot of time to write or post today. What I am going to to do is include what I wrote on Facebook yesterday coupled with what St. John Kanty posted on there website.

What I wrote on Facebook:

Saint John Kanty Church kicked off its 125th anniversary year today. It was incredible to sit back in this church and recognize the gravity of it all. This is a place where my ancestors were baptized, went to school, married, had their funerals, etc. This is the place where I still worship. And Saint John Kanty is still here. I think it is really cool that we can part be of place our ancestors were as well.

What St. John Kanty posted on their website:

IT WAS A GREAT DAY FOR ST JOHN KANTY PARISH FOR THE KICKOFF MASS TO OUR YEAR LONG CELEBRATION OF 125 YEARS AS A PARISH COMMUNITY! MULTIPLE CELEBRATIONS WERE INCLUDED: CHRIST THE KING SUNDAY, THE BLESSING AND PLACING OF A NEW CROWN ON OUR INFANT OF PRAGUE, AND OUR OPENING MASS, CELEBRATED BY SEVEN PRIESTS AND TWO DEACONS! THE MUSIC INCLUDED AN ORIGINAL COMPOSITION FOR THE ANNIVERSARY YEAR BY SJK MUSIC DIRECTOR LAWRENCE MAGUDA: IN THIS PLACE, AS WELL AS TRUMPET ACCOMPANIEMENT BY JOHN MAGUDA. A RECEPTION IN KANTY’S KITCHEN WAS ATTENDED BY MANY, INCLUDING PEOPLE WITH A FORMER CONNECTION TO SJK THROUGH BAPTISM, MARRIAGE AND SCHOOL GRADUATION.

WE THANK ALL THOSE WHO ATTENDED THE MASS AND RECEPTION AS WELL AS THE MANY HANDS THAT PREPARED THE SPECIAL DECORATIONS FOR THE MASS AND THE SCHOOL HALL. NOT TO BE LEFT OUT IS THE SPECIAL BLEND OF MUSIC SUNG BY OUR PARISH CHOIR.

WE HOPE TO WELCOME MANY OF YOU BACK DURING OUR YEAR OF CELEBRATION, AS WELL AS THOSE WHO COULD NOT ATTEND THIS MASS…ENJOY THE PHOTOS AND MEMORIES!

  1. Do you have any paper work on the students that attended St. John Kanty’s school years ago? My father and his brothers lived across the street at 108 Swinburne. I’d love to get some of his report cards if possible. His name was Teddy Richard Opoka. I am his youngest daughter Karen (nee Opoka) Phillips.
