Big Saturday Clean-Up at the Adam Mickiewicz Library & Dramatic Circle

The soul behind many of Broadway-Fillmore’s treasures are the people who run and maintain them. The Adam Mickiewicz Library & Dramatic Circle (AMLDC) is alive because of the people who give countless hours of their own time to preserve and protect it.

On Saturday, August 11th, 2012, you have an opportunity to to roll up your sleeves and help out.

Here is a list of tasks the AMLDC have on tap for August 11.

  • Repaint pool room and back hallway
  • Scrape and paint front of building
  • Replace blocks on south side near downspout
  • Landscape in front of building
  • Stain fence
  • Clean side room maybe scrape old plaster off
  • Take junk out of basement
  • Mop and Vacuum floors
  • Clean woodwork
  • Paint front steps

I sent clean-up organizer John Killian a few questions about the event.

BFA: Who came up with the idea for the BIG SATURDAY Clean-up?

JK: The Club’s cleanup night is on Wednesday at 7:pm every week. But a lot of the time schedules don’t work out or there isn’t enough time to do big projects. So while talking with the head of the organization Gary Ptak, we mutually agreed on the need for a Saturday cleanup. I talked to the Young Preservationists of Buffalo and some one posted the cleanup on one of the preservationist sites and more and more people got involved. I will be running it because Gary will be away that weekend.

BFA: What type of impact will the clean-up have on the AMLDC?

JK: The clean-up will make the club look and feel better. Walls will be painted the grounds will be cleaner and nicer looking. Because we dont want anyone to get hurt, the club wont ask anyone to go beyond safe limits. Inside walls will be washed and dust bunnies will be mercilessly hunted and dealt with. Then when people walk in they will notice the old fashioned charm not the cobwebs.

BFA: Why is it important for people to get involved with places like the AMLDC in the neighborhood?

JK: It is important for people to take an interest in places like Mickiewicz because they are the places where people can talk freely and friends have met up for decades. Strip mall bars dont have that kind of charm to them. I’m involved because I’m Polish so I want to see part of my heritage survive. I stay involved because I will never be rich. But with places like Mickiewicz in my life will be full of interesting times. People from Poland come here regularly.

This old saying by John Heywood comes to mind.

Many hands make light work.

If you have some time and want to help make a big difference at a Broadway-Fillmore institution, stop the Adam Mickiewicz Library & Dramatic Circle on August 11th.
