Demolishing Polonia: Video, Swinburne Street

On Sunday, I shot a quick little video of Swinburne Street between Broadway and Ashley. There are only two or three houses along this stretch still occupied by people.

  1. How sad is that…my family home is still standing in the neighborhood. The nest egg my parents thought they would have, in their property ownership, (once they reached retirement) is nothing but a financial burden that we can’t even give away…it is worth less than when they purchased it in 1950. After seeing last week’s News 4 report on how law enforcement has been neglecting deplorable issues in the neighborhood, it is no wonder. To add insult to injury, the city sent out inspectors and now we have to go to court and explain why we don’t want to put thousands of dollars in repairs into a property not even worth a few grand…they are threatening demolition and billing us for it…my heart feels like it is breaking. When is the city going to step up and take some responsibility for their neglectful attitude?

  2. How depressing all of this is? I think of my parents and grandparents who took such pride in their beautiful homes in the neighborhood. Their memories, my memories demolished.
