The Mass was beautiful. The Chopin Singing Society was wonderful.

But…

It was bittersweet.

I still don’t understand why the parish has to merge with Saint John Kanty…sure I understand the reasons given by the Buffalo Diocese, but there seems like another alternative could have been found.

In everything we have seen in the neighborhood and its decline over the last 20-30 years, a constant has always been these beacons of hope.  The basilica has withstood the decline and remained open.  Sure the parish wasn’t what it was once.  But is was ALIVE.

Faith is bigger than a building…I agree. But places like Saint Adalbert’s are an embodiment of faith.  The people who built the basilica did it as part of their faith.  The people who brought life to it over the years did it because of their faith.  The people who have maintained it did it as part of their faith.  To have the parish disappear along with the community of Saint Adalbert’s like it didn’t matter anymore just seems wrong.

  1. The Catholic Church wonders why people are leaving droves. This is a prime example. Why worship with a church who has no problem trampling over the faith of its flock?
