(By Judith Felski – Saint John Kanty) On Sunday, August 14, 2011 the Sacrament of Baptism was celebrated by family and friends for Scott Andrew Wegst. Scott Andrew is the fourth generation of Slazak’s to be baptized at St. John Kanty R. C. Church. His parents are Scott and Jennifer (Slazak) Wegst. Jennifer’s parents are Richard and Debra Slazak. Their son Stephen is godfather of Scott Andrew. Richard is past Scoutmaster of SJK Troop 107 and still serves as Leader. Richard and his siblings Ronald, Michael and Collette were all baptized at SJK. Richard (deceased) and Dolores Slazak, great grandparents of Scott Andrew, were both baptized at St. John Kanty. Dolores, an octogenarian, has been a member of the SJK Choir since 1941 – that’s 60 years of singing!

The Sacrament of Baptism, often called “The door of the Church” because it is the first of the seven sacraments not only in time (since most Catholics receive it as infants) but in priority, since the reception of the other sacraments depends on it, is the first of the three Sacraments of Initiation, the other two being the Sacrament of Holy Communion and the Sacrament of Confirmation. Once baptized, a person becomes a member of the Church. Traditionally, the rite of baptism was held outside the doors of the main part of the church, to signify this fact.

  1. This story illustrates why churches like Kanty’s are important. The connection between generations at one church is beautiful.
