This sad little storefront patiently awaited reuse until it was way too late. Judging by zooming in on the original photo, the building was in pretty bad shape.

As I was driving westbound on Broadway on Friday afternoon to meet up with Chris for an appointment, just as I was by this building, a loud noise, billowing dust cloud and a shower of bricks spilled onto the sidewalk and opposite lane. One of the workers ran as the facade came tumbling down.

As Chris and I were chatting, we saw several emergency vehicles headed towards that area. Nothing was reported in the local media and we certainly hope no one was hurt.

I don’t have much information on the building and it’s not in the historical resource survey. The crest of the building says “1917”. Had I had the time, I would have asked to look for this cement plaque among the rubble. It’s buildings like this that need the services of Buffalo ReUse to come in and salvage some of its historical bits. I’m sure there was some cool stuff designed into that place!

  1. Construction start 5/30/17 completed 11/7/17 as a concrete bloc public garage more then likely a repair shop with gas pumps at the curb but I could not find any fact to that the brick facade was added at a later date the original owner when built was Max Katz

  2. I spoke to building inspector Tracy Krug on 2/20/08 and he informed me while surveying the building the floors were so rotted 2 building inspectors almost fell thru it. He said the walls were buckled inward and it was in dangerous condition.

  3. As owners of 1121 Broadway, we were very concerned with the demo of this building. We purchased our warehouse on this block for storage/office space for our business at the Broadway Market. Although we got a great deal, 1121 like 1127 had been neglected for years. We have had to have a new roof put on, new heating, all new plumbing, fixed the elevator and hope to have the exterior painted. It has been an uphill battle to try to push our neighbor at 1125 to do something with his building. He lives in NJ and has not done anything to the property . We have called him repeatedly to try to take the building off his hands to no avail. The city has also been contacted but pressure needs to be put on these property owners to do something with their properties. Our fear is that it will face the same fate as 1127 and further destroy another block on a once thriving retail district on Broadway.
