An open letter of sorts to group looking to develop public market downtown…

I was going to send this privately, but Mike Miller’s open letter to Mr. Issa came to mind…so here I am posting for you to read…thoughts?

Newell,

How are you?

I’ve been reading a series of posts on BR about a committee you helped initiate in efforts to bring a public/flea market to Buffalo.

The latest post featured a tour you and your group took of the DL&W (Delaware, Lackawanna & Western) Terminal on the Buffalo River eying up space to help bring life to the concept and touting the dynamics of the space available there…70,000 sq feet, etc.  The building itself though would need renovations to accommodate such a venture.

As the idea is still in its infancy, I would ask that your committee take a look at the Broadway Market.  The Market has well over 100,000 sq feet of space with the infrastructure and vendors already in place. It is a hop, skip and jump (ok, maybe a hop and skip) from downtown and already sees a significant amount of traffic.  There is a lot of potential at the Market for expanding what it does as a public market and grow.

A collaboration of sorts by your group and the Broadway Market is an interesting scenario and could help fast-track your project, help shape the future of the Market and help bolster the Broadway-Fillmore area.

Give me a shout…I can arrange a sit down with the Market board, take your group on a tour and talk possibilities.

I am wearing 2 hats here…my BFA hat and my Market board hat…

Talk to you soon,

Christopher Byrd
