Mayor Byron Brown Announces Free Museum Day in Buffalo

Mayor Byron W. Brown issued a proclamation declaring Saturday, September 21, 2019 as Museum Day 2019 in the City of Buffalo as part of Smithsonian Magazine’s 15th annual ‘Museum Day, a celebration of boundless curiosity’.  Mayor Brown and the Buffalo Arts Commission teamed up on this effort by recruiting local participating organizations and promoting the day to the public.

“As we continue to build an inclusive and equitable City of Opportunity in Buffalo, where no one is left behind, Museum Day 2019 is a great way to introduce our residents and visitors to the many wonderful opportunities for life-long learning and enjoyment at Buffalo area museums and cultural institutions,” said Mayor Brown. “Buffalo is known for its museums and cultural institutions and I look forward to showcasing our City’s great cultural treasures in a way that’s affordable for all.”

On Museum Day, participating museums and organizations open their doors for free to those who download a branded ticket. Museum Day goes beyond getting visitors through museum doors—it acts as a springboard to empower and help advance the hopes and ambitions of the public, particularly school-aged children and those in underrepresented communities. It represents a national commitment to access, equity and inclusion.

The following local museums and cultural institutions in Buffalo plan to participate in Museum Day 2019:

  • Albright Knox Art Gallery
  • Buffalo Harbor Museum
  • Buffalo History Museum
  • Buffalo Museum of Science
  • Nash House Museum
  • Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site

This year, Museum Day will celebrate the Smithsonian Year of Music, an institution-wide initiative celebrating the Smithsonian’s vast musical collections and resources through 365 days of music-related programming. Music is not only a reflection of human creativity and innovation but also a key method of communication and cross-cultural exchange and understanding. The Smithsonian Year of Music crosses disciplines, bringing together music-related resources in art, history, culture, science and education. The Smithsonian invites participating museums to create programming to support this initiative and highlight the world’s rich musical heritage.
