Community Invited to New Mary Statue Blessing at St. John Kanty Church on August 14th

On May 15, 2018, a statue of Mary, which sat outside of St. John Kanty R.C. Church in Buffalo at corner of Broadway and Brownell, was pulled down off its marble foundation and smashed with a baseball bat.

From a WBFO story on the incident:

A Catholic church on Buffalo’s East Side was struck by a vandal late Tuesday, who removed a statue of the Virgin Mary from a garden, severely damaged it and left behind a note warning that “this building will be destroyed.” The suspect is known to the neighborhood and witnesses suggested to WBFO that mental health may be a factor in the incident.

WBFO Audio:

Fast forward three months, a new statue was purchased by St. John Kanty after receiving generous donations from parishioners and the community. The new statue was installed on July 30, 2018. There has been a Mary statue at the corner of Broadway and Brownell outside of the church since the 1960s.

On Tuesday, August 14, 2018, the parish is inviting the community to come the Vigil Mass of the Assumption, celebrated by Bishop Malone, followed by the blessing of the new Mary statue. Mass is at 5 p.m. There will also be refreshments after Mass in the church’s cafe.
