What’s Going on with the former Transfiguration Church

Yesterday, Andrew Gołębiowski posted a photo on Facebook of a contracting crew outside of the former Transfiguration church on Sycamore Street. It looked like the workers were prepping for demolition. This photo and others were shared around Facebook, which led to a lot of speculation as to what exactly was going on with the building.

The good news is that Transfiguration is not going to be demolished. A few hours after the initial speculation, word came via Facebook from Jessie Fischer of Preservation Buffalo Niagara.

From Facebook:

Ok confirmed: several weeks ago, the city felt they might need to do an emergency demo, however, Steve Karnath and I have been working hard to convince them that the only immediate threat was the cupola. We got a small emergency grant from the National Trust and Kevin Connors did an engineering evaluation confirming that this is the only part of the building posing a public issue.

The City agreed with our assessment and used their emergency funds to do the cupola removal and is currently shoring the roof in this area.

There will be no demo here today!

Steve and I are also working on a new ownership and maintenance structure for the building, so if you know anyone who has a use for a super cool old church, have them contact me.

It would have been nice for the city to let us know if advance that the crews were out, but altogether this is a win.

Here are photos from Don Farrell of work being done today:
