Photos: Beauty on Broadway by Michael J. Miller

Broadway Fillmore Alive (BFA) was founded in 2006 by Christopher Byrd, Michele Johnson and Michael Miller. The whole concept to create this website was centered around the idea of promoting and showcasing the positive and beautiful aspects of the neighborhood. A lot of the time, most of what you would hear or read about the neighborhood and the East Side negative. We decided to change that. And we did through the pages of BFA.

Mike Miller passed away in 2009. One thing I really loved about Mike is that he saw beauty on the East Side. That’s probably the biggest reason we connected so well. We both saw the potential here in the neighborhood. We looked beyond what others saw. Mike and I also shared a passion for photographing the beauty we saw in the neighborhood.

Not too long after BFA started, Mike put together Beauty on Broadway. It’s a photo album that he would literally show everyone who shared his passion for the East Side. It captures the beauty he saw. After his death, his family gave me the album. As we are approaching the seventh anniversary of his death, I decided to scan it and share online. The photos were taken in 2005-2006.

  1. Beauty on Broadway???…The beauty of what was Broadway is a distant memory….Broadway is in shambles…The Polish residents for a century & more created a masterpiece in Polonia. When the vacated, the existing inhabitants literally destroyed in a few years what it took decades to create. On Friday nights after a double feature @ the Lincoln theater, (Broadway & Titus),my buddy Richard & I would walk east on Broadway to Bailey, south to William St., west to Memorial Dr., then back to Broadway-after a stop @ the Dairy Bar by Memorial Dr. & Curtiss st. I’d then go home to Club Romway, he to Titus St. To be of European origin, try that walk now….how many blocks would one last & check out the scenery of barricaded buildings & vacant lots. There was a time..there was a time…

    1. You know who really destroyed the neighborhood. The Polish slumlords. These white trash let a lot of houses fall into disrepair, they were only interested in making a buck. People like you abandoned the neighborhood after you sucked the life and money out of it. You destroyed it.

      1. You know nothing of me nor what you speak of. I loved Buffalo-I wanted to spend the rest of my life there. I worked @ Bells IGA for 5 years, & @ UPS for 4 years while going to Hutch Tech, then ECC.Bells was no career, & UPS would not hire full-time @ all by 1976. I aced the civil service exams for Police & Fire because I wanted to serve Buffalo, but was told my application would be in the trash by the time I stepped outside due to affirmative action. Those slumlords maintained those homes for dozens of years, inhabitants are responsible to cut the grass & paint houses aren’t they? The slumlords, business owners, & I paid taxes to sustain the city-not suck life out of it like welfare/food stamp recipients. I left the city to find work & stayed in that occupation & home for 37 years before retiring.Your assessment of what transpired in Buffalo is delusional, Mr.Witarski.
