AM-POL Eagle: B&J’s on Syacamore, a notable neighborhood auto repair shop

(Gregory Witul – AM-POL Eagle) Last week, I had a new experience. While sitting at a red light at the corner of Genesee and Oak, a tractor 1-Fullscreen capture 8102015 114000 PMtrailer ran over the front end of my car. My hood got dented, a headlight popped off, the bumper is ajar and the fascia has a tire mark on it, but luckily I could walk away from the accident. Today there are a number of collision places I can take the car to, but if this happened in 1975 there’s only one place I would trust with my auto, B & J Car Specialists at 999 Sycamore in Buffalo’s East Side.

For much of the first quarter of the 20th century, 999 Sycamore was just another building first serving as Knast’s confectionary store and then a rooming house. At the dawn of the Great Depression, Anthony Bajinski (Baginski) had a new dream for the location at the corner of Loepere and Sycamore, a gas station. Before he could install the tanks, Bajinski would have to appear before the Buffalo Zoning Board of Appeals and an apparent date with history.
