  1. I was in Kantys for a mass on your second Sunday promotion. I know it is most likely a money issue but the church needs a lot of work.

    1. Mark – we thank you for recently visiting St. John Kanty Church. Sorry you got the impression that Second Sunday is just a money issue; it is so much more than that! Surely as a parish we appreciate any offering made by a visitor, but it is easy to see how you would need to double the attendance to see any significant difference.

The Broadway Fillmore Alive people came up with the idea of Second Sunday in order to highlight the wonderful architecture and the spirit of the people in the various parishes in East Side Polonia. It is always good when you go some place new and different to go with an open heart and mind and experience what the ‘locals’ have built and have experiencedas in the case of SJK for over 125 years. When you look at the church from the outside it is very typical of something seen in Europe in the late 1800’s; however, when you enter it is totally different than what you expect because of two fires, one in the late ’40’s, the other, much more devastating, in 1955. The second fire resulted in a total renovation of the inside of the church.

Some of the treasures that we are very proud of can be seen: the four stained glass windows in the sanctuary were created by local and nationally known artist Jozef Mazur; the carving of the Last Supper up in front of the choir loft is one of the few things saved from the fire of ’55. It was installed in the church in 1904 and has a very unique history; and our organ, said to be one of the finest and most unique in the area. One of Buffalo’s young and upcoming organists even cited the organ in his post-graduate writings as the one to play if you are an organist and come to Buffalo. While in the choir loft, the rose window dates from 1892 and was made by Buffalo Stained Glass Works; that is original to the building. The life size depiction of the crucifixion of Christ over the main altar is unique with it use of different colors of marble, imported from Italy. The use of the different colors of marble can be seen throughout the church and also in the statues in the two side altars. Mark, we invite you to come back again if you are so inclined. The Christmas season finds the church beautifully decorated in the traditional style, and our Easter celebrations starting with Holy Thursday are also very traditional. We hope you come to visit us again, not thinking that you have to give something but thinking you can take a lot from St. John Kanty.
