Buffalo Spree, Wilson Street Farm: The Stevens Family

(By Nancy J Parisi, Buffalo Spree) Once inside the Stevens family’s Fillmore Avenue home, a visitor immediately notices the peace of this household. We are assembled in their comfortable living room, which features a piano; other musical instruments hang on the walls. The smell of healthy food prepared for lunch wafts from the huge kitchen nearby. This room, outfitted with an oversized island, is, according to mom Janice, the “hub of the house.” The instruments come off the walls during regular family group concerts and monthly jam sessions with invited friends.

In honor of Leap Day, the family has voted to take the day off from their home-schooling. Plans for doing something special are made, and one of the younger children (Jerusha, ten) suggests ice cream for dessert that night. The family roll call includes parents Janice (forty-six) and Mark (forty-seven), daughter Alex (twenty-two), Tucker (twenty), Wilson (seventeen), Keturah (fifteen), Titus (thirteen), Jerusha (ten), and adopted son Milton (ten). Two standard poodles (Horatio and Murrey) round out the clan.
