Saint Ann’s scheduled for closure

Well…it looks like the Buffalo Diocese is finally going to pull the plug on Saint Ann’s.  The closing date is set for 07/27.

Word leaked out today that an announcement will be made before Mass on Sunday detailing the news.

From the Buffalo News:

An announcement is expected to be made at Mass on Sunday.

The church’s most active members quietly worked to rebuild membership as they continued to care for the massive building. They had hoped the bishop would reconsider a decision he made four years ago that would merge St. Ann parish with nearby SS. Columba & Brigid parish.

Just last month, Kmiec celebrated the 125th anniversary of the church’s consecration.

But diocesan officials have maintained since the merger announcement in 2007 that the bishop eventually would move to reduce the status of St. Ann to secular use.

Why close it?  The church draws a decent amount of people.  The whole idea of Saint Ann’s being closed sickens me.

I will try to get more info and some reactions from BFA’s friends at Saint Ann’s and what its parishioners intend to do.

Sad…
