Photos: May Crowning – Saint Adalbert Basilica

On Saturday, May 15, friends and parishioners of Saint Adalbert Basilica held their May Crowning after the 4 pm mass.

It was a beautiful mass and experience…I was glad I was able to participate.

The crowning took place outside after a procession  to the Grotto of the Immaculate Conception adjacent to the Basilica.

The grotto, constructed in 1901, is a close replica of the one in Lourdes, France.  It features statues of Saint Bernadette and Our Lady of Lourdes and depicts the apparition of Mary to Saint Bernadette.

Parishioners placed intentions in the grotto along with a stone.  Both are practices seen in other parts of the world at religious sites.  Leaving a stone marks an individuals presence.

If you have never been to Saint Adalbert Basilica, the grotto is beautiful…stop by, say a prayer and leave a stone.

  1. Chris,

How do you find the time to get to all of these different events?

The pictures are beautiful by the way.

When I was a child, my mother would always stop here when we would take walks around the neighborhood and say the Hail Mary.

  2. The May Crownings are beautiful. Adding the outdoor element is makes it even more special.

The idea that the grotto there is almost 110 years old is incredible. Does anyone realize how important these churches in the old neighborhood are?

  3. I wish I could have come. The grotto at Saint Adalbert’s has always intrigued me. I didn’t know it was a representation of Our Lady of Lourdes. Very interesting and Mark is right about how important these churches are.

@Chris Keep up the great work. I love BFA. You help people like me stay in touch with the neighborhood.
