Fran is one of the nicest ladies you will ever meet…she also one of my favorite B-F type people…she doesn’t seek the spotlight…she helps to help.

From the day 25 years ago that Response to Love soup kitchen started dishing up hot meals to needy East Side residents, Fran Zalewski has been a mainstay in the downstairs cafeteria on Kosciusko Street behind St. Adalbert’s Basilica.

That is, except briefly in 1996, when her husband, Theodore, an Army veteran of World War II, was hospitalized after being viciously mugged on a nearby street, and a recent stretch when she was laid up with severe arthritis.

She bounced back both times — in the latter instance with a brace to support her aching midriff as she prepares the day’s fare starting at 6 a. m. each Monday through Wednesday and a cane to help her navigate from cupboard to refrigerator to stove.

  1. What a beautiful story and what a beautiful lady. This is the BF I remember of my youth. I remember neighborhoods filled with people like Fran.
