I was going through some old photos tonight and found this interesting picture from 1976. It is of a neighborhood-wide parade in celebration of the United States’ Bicentennial…my father took the pic from our house on Ashley Street between Mohr and Young Streets. (current day view click here)

This parade made its way throughout the neighborhood.

Those were the days. It seemed like everyone in the neighborhood had fireworks. The police left B-F’s amateur pyrotechnicians alone on the 4th of July. It was truly a sight to behold…fireworks everywhere…street parties and neighborhood picnics.

The morning after was also a blast both literally and figurtively as my friends and I would go out and look for un-used fireworks left by the curb around the neighborhood.

Good times…

  1. Yes, the 4th was a great time….my dad would buy tons of fireworks (even though he was a deputy sheriff) and we would blow them off all afternoon and night. The next day was the same as yours with one exception – I was responsible to clean up all that mess and boy was it a mess! We lived at 63 Mohr and on the 5th of July, the entire street in front of my house was covered in firecracker and ladyfinger paper!

  2. I remember picking up unexploded firecrackers on the day after from near the curbs, breaking them in half, lighting them and stomping on them to get them to explode.

We never had firecrackers at my house. My mom, who lived through the war in Poland and survived bombing got not enjoyment from hearing explosions. She’d say “these people enjoying fireworks never lived through war”.
