This year Corpus Christi Church is proposing a different type of Lent. While they’re still basing their observance on prayer, fasting and almsgiving, there’s going to be a special common focus.

At the beginning of Lent all who come to Mass will be invited to take part one of the silicone bracelets that have become so popular and widespread the past few years. This one will be light purple in keeping with the Lenten custom and includes the words “SPIRIT” and “acomplaintfreeworld.org .”

Corpus Christi’s bulletin says: “Complaining doesn’t fit in with the message of Jesus and our Christian call… So those who participate will wear these trying to be non-complaining individuals and a non-complaining community of faith.”

Corpus Christi said the bracelet-wearing will encourage all, from the pastor to the newest member, to concentrate not only on eliminating complaining but to promote thankfulness and peace.

BFA congratulates Corpus Christi in its spiritual venture. It can be a lesson for all of us, parishioner and non-parishioner alike. It’s easy to complain when faced with difficult circumstances, especially in a struggling neighborhood like ours. But hopefully it will inspire reflection on the advances already made, and the great things to come, both with Easter and in general.
