As we reported earlier, Corpus Christi Church has received a promise of $450,000 toward the replacement of the deteriorated slate roof over the church. In order to qualify for this grant, the parish must raise another $450,000 on its own. Thanks to the generosity of local businesses and parishioners, Corpus Christi Church is offering a three prize lottery to help raise necessary funds.

Prizes are as follows:
1st Prize: 2 round-trip airfares to Poland plus $500 cash
2nd Prize: an HDTV valued at $1,000
3rd Prize: an X-Box

The airline tickets are being offered through the generosity of the owners of JABCO General Store at the Broadway Market. Raffle tickets are available at JABCO, located in the middle of the Market, from Monday-Saturday between 9am-4pm. You can also call Vicki at 716/812-2524 if you’d like books to sell to your friends and family or if you live out of town.

The drawing will take place on Sunday August 24 at Corpus Christi’s annual Dozynki Harvest Festival.

Dozynki are a time to thank God for the bounty of the harvest. In Poland, the celebration marks the end of the wheat harvest. Dozynki comes from the word “dozynac”, which means to make the final cuttings. A special Mass of Thanksgiving will be held on Sunday, August 24 with a specially designed wreath of grain and a specially baked bread carried to the altar. This year’s Dozynki, which runs Sat. Aug. 23 and Sun. Aug. 24, will also offer a chance to enjoy Polish food and music, an opportunity to buy handmade religious and folk items, participate in historic church tours and take part in many other activities.

Corpus Christi Church was recently designated a New York State Landmark and has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The historic church building marked its 100th anniversary last year. The church at located at 199 Clark St., one block east of the Broadway Market.
