Tonight I was surfing around the local TV station’s web sites…when checking out a story about Key Bank closing at the Broadway Market, I noticed that there were 43 comments attached to the story in WGRZ’s Buffalo forum…what I found there when reading was not only disturbing but sad as well…I don’t really post too much opinion on here, but when I read a lot of the comments, I began to wonder what the heck is wrong with people and couldn’t let it go…you would think that this being the 21st century and all, our world, especially our Buffalo world, would be different…it was stark reminder to me that for as far as we have come as a society, we still have a long way to go…just the idea that someone would take the time and energy to post such things for the world to see is disheartening.

Here is a link to the pdf file I printed with the 43 comments

It is even sad to think that a lot of these comments were posted on 01/16…Martin Luther King’s birthday.

  1. Chris – After reading about 30-40 comments on the Channel 2 website, I started to get sick. Most of these people are naive Suburbanites who are not in favor of the City or the Broadway Market at all. The comments are nasty to the people who live in East Buffalo and that makes me sick. Pretensious people with their new fancy expensive cars worried about them getting broken into. I can taken them or leave them – I choose to leave them.

  2. I think people make BF out to be worse than it is.

From what I hear….crime has gone down in that are the last couple years.

  3. I can’t believe how close minded people are. Some of these people are genuinely afraid to go into any part of the city let alone BF. I remember talking to an Orchard Park resident about going downtown to St. Louis for Mass and he told me to watch my wallet. I was lost for words and simply muttered, “nah not downtown.” I couldn’t believe how people perceive the city. That is why websites like these are so important. Just like people stereotype people, they stereotype places. I live in Kenmore and people are calling it a ghetto because it borders the city!?! Have they ever left their friendly confines of Orchard Park Blvd or Transit Road?? It’s hard enough to promote the city to non-Buffalonians. I can’t believe it has to be marketed to people living in this area and we have to defend it from slander from our own people.

  4. I’m disappointed in these people, because they are critical of a community that they really know little about. If that’s the prevailing attitude in so called “better” neighborhoods, I’m glad they’re not my neighbors!

  5. What do yuu guys think of the area around the Browadway Market/Peckham in terms of crime?

Is it really as bad as some people say?

  6. I read the ‘negativity’ posted about the East Side and I voiced my opinion. I tried to support my view of the East Side, but it didn’t matter to some people.

I guess my ‘downfall’ was the fact that I admitted to leaving Buffalo to attend College in Ohio and find employment in the Computer Electronics field elsewhere. I tried to find emplyment in the “Computer Field” in Buffalo during 1987; but the jobs weren’t there…

I tried to “better” my life and now I’m being “slammed” for it. None the less, Hutch Tech High School gave me the education basis I needed to attend DeVry Institute of Technology in Columbus, Ohio and I thank every teacher at Hutch Tech for all that they did to “teach me” what I needed to know to succeed in life…

I hope that everyone can “see the good” in the community and pray for a better world…

  7. I have been there late at night and haven’t really seen anybody else. During the day, it’s like most places in the city. There really aren’t that many people still there. There are a good amount of run-down abandoned houses that could be removed though. There is a lot of history there. Don’t confuse my words with “Knock the area down”. Keep the history, increase it’s safety and image. Show your support by going there on Dyngus Day!

  8. Sad comments but most of them came from suburbanites.
My understanding is that KeyBank like most other American banks these days has lost lots of money and is retrenching cutting both branches and jobs. Most likely this branch wasn’t that busy. However, the BM needs more shops perhaps more fresh produce and flowers as well as bakeries. Crafts would also be good but quality crafts. I don’t think it’s scary at all. I can see where the parking ramp would be scary to some though. I’m not a fan of them myself. How about a few security guards? Long Live the Broadway Market.
