About 125 volunteers helped transform a vacant lot adjacent to the Matt Urban Center into a $250,000 playground Wednesday.

The volunteers were among thousands from 169 companies and institutions in Erie County and 54 in Niagara County who participated in the 15th annual United Way Day of Caring.

At 160 sites across Erie County, more than 3,000 volunteers participated. And in Niagara County, 676 volunteers helped out on 50 community projects. Work at the various sites included interior and exterior cleaning, landscaping, painting, removing carpet and laying down tile.
