You might be surprised to hear who decides what happens to churches in the Buffalo Catholic Diocese when they close. It’s not the Diocese.
“When parishes merge, it’s up to the new parish community to decide what the future use of these properties will be,” said Diocesan spokesman Kevin Keenan, who adds parishes that stay open will have three options: sell the old buildings, lease them or keep them open.
2 On Your Side’s Stefan Mychajliw: “What steps are being done to ensure that these buildings aren’t just abandoned, or left neglected, or that thieves don’t come in and steal things like the pews, the glass, or the copper?
“It’s up to the local parish communities to make sure that these properties are secure. They’re given guidelines when the merger is announced regarding how to secure buildings.”
