Just prior to the 1976 election, President Gerald R. Ford made a whirlwind tour of Buffalo. It included attending the 9 a.m. Mass at St. Stanislaus Church with nearly 1500 parishioners. He was greeted with the traditional bread and salt and received red roses and white mums from children in Polish folk costumes.
Polish-American veterans provided an honor guard as the president took his seat. Ford was the third U.S. President to sign the church’s guest book. (Theodore Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy were the others.)
