A huge crowd savored the flavor of Wigilia at the Broadway Market on Saturday

On Saturday afternoon Wigilia came early to the Broadway Market.

If you don’t know, the Polish Wigilia Meal is traditionally meatless as it completes the fast which awaits the birth of Jesus. The waiting or vigil (Wigilia) culminates in the sharing of the Oplatek and the Wigilia Meal. It requires special traditional table setting and a festive menu of traditional dishes. The dinner is generally followed by singing of Polish Koledy (Carols) and culminates in the Eucharistic Meal at the Pasterka (Midnight or Shepherd’s Mass.)

The Broadway Market made Wigilia the centerpiece of Saturday’s installment of the ongoing “Savor the Flavor of the Market” food demonstration and tasting series.

The market actually had to stop selling tickets to the event because of the overwhelming response they received to Wigilia demonstration. When something like that happens, you know an event is going to be a huge success and it was.

The video above gives you some highlights from the event and shows “Savor the Flavor” organizer and presenter Sandy Starks in action. Father Anzelm Chalupka from Corpus Christi also participated in Wigilia giving the crowd a lesson on Oplatek.

More “Savor the Flavor” events are in the works starting with a Super Bowl weekend football themed demonstration.
