Vive La Casa funding crisis may mean closing

Another organization that isn’t necessarily in the Broadway-Fillmore area but could use a little B-F-A love is Vive La Casa. They are located on Wyoming Street in Buffalo’s east side.

Vive La Casa is a nonprofit agency, which formed after a group of Catholic nuns began noticing refugees living on city streets almost 22 years ago.

What do they do?

From their website…

VIVE, Inc. is an interfaith organization which assists refugees seeking protection under the Geneva Convention in Canada and the United States. VIVE provides refugees with safe shelter, food, legal services, and care for other urgent needs.

Vive La Casa now faces a drastic loss of funding and could actually close their doors if something is not done.

Because of Erie County’s budget crisis over the last couple of years, they have lost a signifigant portion of their funding.

The board of Vive is making an appeal to the county legislature on Monday to include $100,000 in the county budget to help keep their vital services going for refugees that make their way to Buffalo.

What you can do to help is contact your county legislator and ask them to help fund Vive.

Sometimes the Catholic Church gets a bad rap, but it through Catholic missions like St. Lukes Mission of Mercy, The Response to Love Center, The Ladies of Charity and Vive La Casa that vital work is performed for the community which would otherwise be ignored.
