Vacant and abandoned properties and how do we deal with it

National Vacant Properties Cammpaign: Creating Opportunity from Abandonment

While flipping through the B-lo News this morning, I found an interesting article about a plan/report that was released last week about dealing with the problem of vacant and abandoned properties.

I searched and searched the News’ site and could not find the electronic version, but not to worry…I scanned a copy for you.

‘Living lab’ would treat blighted areas
BY DEIDRE WILLIAMS NEWS STAFF REPORTER – 11/19/2006

The Buffalo region could become the nation’s first living laboratory for vacant and abandoned properties due to a yearlong study of such eyesores in the city and the towns of Tonawanda, Cheektowaga and Amherst.

The region was among seven areas, across the country selected by the National Vacant Properties Campaign for the study of how to reclaim and restore urban and first-ring suburban neighborhoods affected by blight and property abandonment.

The result is a report, titled “Blueprint Buffalo,” which includes positive feedback as well as an extensive to-do list The report was presented to officials last week.

“It very plainly lays out the circumstances that the city and towns face in light of declining population and the
choices they need to make,” said Michael Clarke, program director at Local Initiatives Support Corp.
