Buffalo Rising: 2011 ‘Buy Local’ Holiday Shopping: Day 5 -Broadway Market

The Broadway Market has a long, storied history in Buffalo, and you’d be hard-pressed to find someone in the area that has never heard of it. The Market first opened in 1888 as a merchant of unique foods that brought ethnic traditions, mostly from Polish and other Eastern European immigrants to Buffalo’s East Side.

Buffalo Rising: I Heart Central Terminal Event Kicks Off Buffalo Unscripted

So wish I could have made this event at the Terminal…but vacation in the Finger Lakes wasn’t too bad of an alternative.

From WC Perspective on Buffalo Rising:

On Saturday, I Heart Central Terminal was the kick-off event for Buffalo Unscripted, a documentary produced by the National Trust for Historic Preservation about Buffalo, by Buffalo.  Over the course of this week, the Unscripted team will be fanning out across town with one mission — to have Buffalonians tell it like it is.  In addition to block party meet-ups in Parkside, Allentown, Hamlin Park, Prospect Hill, and Columbus Park, their cameras will be rolling at the Grant Street location of Sweetness_7 (Tuesday, Thursday, Friday), Buffalo ReUse’s ReSource (Thursday), Swannie House (Thursday), Black Rock Arts (Friday), and the Elmwood-Bidwell Farmers Market (Saturday).

Buffalo Rising: Get a Peek at Buffalo’s Best-Kept Secret

(By RaChaCha – BR) At least once a month I read that something is “Buffalo’s Best-Kept Secret.”

Although many organizations, shops, venues (even people!) have been labeled “Buffalo’s Best-Kept Secret,” I think that title should legitimately go to that outstanding yet little-heralded organization, the Matt Urban Center.  And if you know anything about their work, you would likely agree with me.  Yet it’s a title they are eagerly and actively looking to shed.  Not the “best” part, of course — the “secret” part.

Buffalo Rising: Long-Range Planning for Central Terminal Underway

(WCPerspective – BR – 04/27/10) With volunteers working on several short-term restoration projects at the Central Terminal, a strategic plan is being drafted that will prioritize stabilization projects and look at how best to prepare the property for long-term use.  Time is of the essence.  By some estimates, if major roof and masonry repairs are not completed in the next few years, the building could be in serious trouble.

“We are focused on two things right now,” says Paul Lang, board member and chair of the Central Terminal Restoration Corporation’s Architectural Advisory Committee.  “We’re really ramping up to the National Trust convention in fall 2011 and expect to complete the strategic plan at about the same time.  It’s kind of a make or break 18 months for us and the building.”

Buffalo Rising: Central Terminal Restoration Projects Advance

While thousands have attended events at the Central Terminal, a dedicated group of volunteers is working behind the scenes to save the beloved building for future generations.  The Central Terminal Restoration Corporation (CRTC) was founded in 1997 to oversee the stabilization and restoration of the property and has made significant progress to date yet much work remains.

The CTRC is an entirely volunteer organization.  Their early work focused on safety issues including securing and stabilizing the building, removing debris, and re-establishing basic infrastructure including electric and water service.  The non-profit organization relies on grant money, government funds, and donations to continue its work on the building.

Buffalo Rising: Angels

Most are aware of Buffalo’s great treasure of religious architecture. Unfortunately, few have a real appreciation for the significant cultural value as these great edifices begin to disappear year by year.

These amazing palaces of worship are increasingly in danger as the population of local parishes ages and declines. There seems to be little civic urgency as churches close, interior treasures are sold off, and the buildings are left to rot. Perhaps WNY takes this amazing collection of art and craft for granted because it has seemed so commonplace in Buffalo. Now, more than ever, the people of WNY need to sit up and take notice as this fragile gift from our ancestors becomes more and more rare.

The amazing collection of angels shown in this slideshow are all from just one Church, Corpus Christi Church, at 199 Clark Street on the city’s East Side. Recently the Church was adopted by the Pauline Fathers, making it safe from closure for the foreseeable future.  I stumbled on this wonderful collection of pictures, and knew I had to do a BRO story about it.

Buffalo Rising: Urban Garden vs. Urban Prairie

deer-thumb-505xauto-2285

Look who didn’t need permission to occupy some land on Buffalo’s East Side.  Bruno, the photographer who took this photo yesterday in front of the abandoned Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority site, said there were so many deer he could only frame a fraction at one time.
