Buffalo News: Banking on a historic revival

(By Deidre Williams – Buffalo New) Less than two miles from downtown Buffalo are the elements of what could be a really vibrant community.

Bounded by Broadway, Fillmore Avenue and Memorial Drive, the 121-year-old Broadway Market is there.

So are HSBC and M&T Bank branches, and a post office.

The long-standing Lt. Col. Matt Urban Human Services Center on Broadway serves some of the poorest neighborhoods on the East Side, and the Central Terminal is among Buffalo’s most architecturally significant structures.

Now a local group intends to tie them all together to reinvent that section of the city with the recent purchase of the former Bank of America branch at 848 Broadway.

Join Team Alive

About a month before Mike Miller passed away last year, we started working on an idea to get more people active and involved in the neighborhood….we came up with the concept of Team Alive.  The idea was was prompted by our growing frustration over not being able to do everything we would like to do to help.

The idea is to put together a volunteer group of people interested in working on a variety of projects in B-F.  At the core of the concept is what we started to do when we came up with Broadway Fillmore Alive.

“Our mission is to work together with community groups, businesses, residents, churches and other organizations to help promote, preserve and revitalize the Broadway-Fillmore area.”

Through our work here and with the various organizations we are affiliated with, our idea has always been to have people look at the neighborhood as a sum of all its parts. I am very proud of this little window we give the world of B-F.

But…

There is more work to be done…there is a lot of the neighborhood that doesn’t get the attention or focus it needs.

Since Mike’s death, it has become harder to focus on broader issues or other initiatives.

If you are interested in finding out more, you can fill out the Team Alive form by clicking here or call 716.218.0BFA.

An informational meeting will be held in October to get the ball rolling.

The level at which you want to help is up to you…whether you want to write on BFA, help inventory buildings in the commercial district or anything in between…there is something you can do.

Alive!!!

Slow posting so far this week…

Sorry for the slow posting this week…BFA was in Lake Placid for some much needed R&R…things will pick up later today.

[see more photos]

New and Improved…

In case you hadn’t noticed, BFA changed today.

Not all of the site upgrades are functional, but they will be over the coming weeks.

Some things to look for…

  • Advertising on BFA with 10% of what we sell going to a B-F not-for-profit of the month
  • Direct event submission form
  • Direct story submission form
  • Some new neighborhood intiatives
  • More audio and video stories including a new series of videos called ‘The 14212′

And more…

I really hope you like the new look…it was both out of necessity with the web’s ever changing scope and a way top freshen things up on BFA.

All of it…to continue to do what we have done for over four years… is to work together with community groups, businesses, residents, churches and other organizations to help promote, preserve and revitalize the Broadway-Fillmore area.

Our readership has grown over the last few years to beyond what we could have ever hoped for.

Alive…

Stay tuned!

BFA is changing Monday

When you tune into BFA on Monday morning, the remodeling job will be over and we will look different.

Because the system we use to deliver content online has changed drastically over the last year, we had change things a bit…for the better we hope.  :-)

Giving thanks…

While Saint Adalbert’s on Saturday, a thought popped into my head.  I was sitting there getting ready for the Brittany Mruczek concert to begin and noticed B-F-A friend Frankie scrambling around the church making sure that the sound system was all set for the performance.  Frankie is just part of a story that helps keep places like Saint Adalbert’s ALIVE.

As I sat in the church watching Frankie, I couldn’t help but think of all the wonderful people who give up time from their lives to help the neighborhood.  A lot of these type of people never get any press or awards…they help out because there is something inside of them telling them to.

These are the people who inspire me most and there are a lot of them.  They use their time, talents and hard work to make a difference in Broadway-Fillmore.  It is through them that hope is channeled into action.

This is simply a shout to all the Frankies out in B-F and a heartfelt THANK YOU for all your efforts.  There are people out there who recognize all you do in helping keep the neighborhood ALIVE!

:-)
