(Bryan Meyer \u2013 Buffalo News) The future of the Broadway Market could be heavily influenced by the outcome of a job search that City Hall has launched for a new executive director.<\/p>\n
The man who has been running the ailing East Side icon for the past year hopes to be reappointed to the job. Thomas A. Kerr, a former senior manager for the Internal Revenue Service, claims headway has been made in trying to broaden the market\u2019s clientele, shore up its vendor base and improve its infrastructure.<\/p>\n
However, some critics are prodding the city to replace Kerr, depicting him as a heavy-handed manager with a big ego who lacks experience in food retailing.<\/p>\n
A selection panel made up of vendors, neighborhood activists and city officials met Wednesday to begin reviewing the resumes of 22 applicants for a job that would oversee what is touted as the nation\u2019s oldest continually operating public market.<\/p>\n
But it\u2019s also a market that has been struggling for survival in recent decades. As population in the Broadway-Fillmore neighborhood continued to shrink, so too did the market\u2019s vendor base and customer volume. Blight and neighborhood crime concerns have compounded the market\u2019s malaise.<\/p>\n
