{"id":3617,"date":"2009-08-10T09:14:34","date_gmt":"2009-08-10T13:14:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/broadwayfillmorealive.org\/2.0\/?p=3617"},"modified":"2009-08-10T09:14:34","modified_gmt":"2009-08-10T13:14:34","slug":"sad-bfa-news-the-passing-of-russell-pawlak","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/broadwayfillmorealive.org\/2.0\/2009\/08\/sad-bfa-news-the-passing-of-russell-pawlak\/","title":{"rendered":"Sad BFA News&#8230;the passing of Russell Pawlak"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/media.buffalonews.com\/smedia\/2009\/08\/10\/06\/3-bn-20090810-B008-russellpawlakre-62863-MI0001.standalone.prod_affiliate.50.jpg?resize=202%2C299\" alt=\"\" width=\"202\" height=\"299\" \/><br \/>\n<em>(courtesy Buffalo News)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Before I got involved with BFA or anything else in Broadway-Fillmore, I was snooping around the Central Terminal some years back\u2026while I was snooping, Russell approached me and gave me a little impromptu tour fo the main concourse of the Terminal\u2026it wasn\u2019t hard to see the passion and love in his eyes he had for the place.<\/p>\n<p>He helped put the Central Terminal back on the radar screen for all of Buffalo and WNY in a big way.<\/p>\n<p>BFA\u2019s thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends\u2026 \u00a0\ud83d\ude41<\/p>\n<p>From <a href=\"http:\/\/www.buffalonews.com\/obituaries\/story\/759476.html\" target=\"_blank\">the Buffalo News<\/a>\u2026<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 13px; margin-left: 0px; line-height: 18px; padding: 0px;\">Bookshelves surrounded Russell Pawlak this week in his Delaware Avenue apartment, reflecting his eclectic interests in literature, history, poetry, art and architecture. A photograph of Albert Camus peeked out, stacks of CDs overflowed on a table, and in the next room a framed print announced an exhibition on surrealism.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 13px; margin-left: 0px; line-height: 18px; padding: 0px;\">Mr. Pawlak\u2019s life was enriched by knowledge, both the kind acquired through books and from a life lived deeply. That life came to an end Saturday from complications from cancer first diagnosed last fall. He was 59.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 13px; margin-left: 0px; line-height: 18px; padding: 0px;\">\u201cThe first thing I think about Russell is he\u2019s the smartest guy I know,\u201d said David Franczyk, a longtime friend and Common Council president. \u201cHe was a perfect recipient of knowledge for its own sake. But he wasn\u2019t just a thinker, he was a doer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 13px; margin-left: 0px; line-height: 18px; padding: 0px;\">Mr. Pawlak, an avid preservationist who was married three times and had two children, played an instrumental role in resuscitating the Central Terminal train station. He also in recent years served on the Buffalo Preservation Board and the Broadway Market\u2019s board of directors.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 13px; margin-left: 0px; line-height: 18px; padding: 0px;\">\u201cMy father had this larger-than-life personality, just a vivacious man whose personality made him seem so much bigger than his 5 feet, 4z inche 1\/3 ,\u201d said his daughter, Hadley Horrigan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 13px; margin-left: 0px; line-height: 18px; padding: 0px;\">Mr. Pawlak worked 28 years as a field service supervisor at the New York State Insurance Fund.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 13px; margin-left: 0px; line-height: 18px; padding: 0px;\">\u201cSo many people look to their job to define their identity. He enjoyed his work and was anxious to go back to work, but [his identity] was as a volunteer in this community,\u201d Mrs. Horrigan said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 13px; margin-left: 0px; line-height: 18px; padding: 0px;\">Added Mr. Franczyk: \u201cHe was a bohemian in a sense, but one who had a job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 13px; margin-left: 0px; line-height: 18px; padding: 0px;\">Mr. Pawlak was born on Buffalo\u2019s East Side in the St. John Kanty neighborhood, graduating from Bishop Ryan High School, where he played football and ran track.
