After paying the rent, putting food on the table and sending the kids to parochial school, there was little money left for pretty paintings. Prints were popular but could still get expensive. To fill this desire for art many businesses began to give it away as a promotional item. Companies would give away pictures of mountains, birds, lakes, rivers and flowers to name a few.<\/p>\n

In Polonia, religious scenes were some of the most popular. This week we\u2019ll take a look at one business which gave away these popular promotional prints, the Chmielewski Bakery in Buffalo\u2019s far East Side.<\/p>\n

The Chmielewski Bakery at 1385 Broadway was one of Polonia\u2019s longest running bakeries.<\/p>\n
