The above video was shot during the 4 pm children\u2019s mass at St. Adalbert\u2019s on Christmas Eve.\u00a0 I had originally planned to go to Corpus Christi for Midnight Mass, but I have relatives in town and they wanted to go to a church in B-F and they have young children.\u00a0<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t know when I made my decision to go to St. Adalbert\u2019s and found out afterwards that parishioners who are appealing to the Vatican to prevent the church\u2019s\u00a0closure lost their\u00a0initial appeal.<\/p>\n

The Vatican\u2019s Congregation for the Clergy has upheld a decision by the Catholic Diocese of Buffalo to close St. Adalbert Catholic Church.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

After reading that on Christmas morning, I realized that this may be St. Adalbert\u2019s last Christmas.\u00a0 I was glad I went.<\/p>\n

The closure\u00a0isn\u2019t 100% definite as of yet.<\/p>\n

The group of parishioners challenging the closing now plans to appeal to the Vatican\u2019s Apostolic Signatura, the highest level of appeal and the last hope for keeping open the 121-year-old East Side church.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy taking our appeal to the Apostolic Signatura, we will be able to fully make the case for keeping St. Adalbert\u2019s open as an active worship site,\u201d Stanley A. Kowalski Jr., a longtime parishioner and cochairman of the Save Saint Adalbert committee, said in a statement.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Now\u2026it is just a waiting game to see what happens.<\/p>\n

This is something St. Adalbert\u2019s\u00a0has been doing for years. \u00a0During the mass on Christmas Eve,\u00a0parishioners and family of parishioners who lost loved ones during the course of the year and are part St. Adalbert\u2019s\u00a0congregation were\u00a0asked to come up on the altar and put an ornament on a tree so loved ones would always be remembered and prayed for around the holidays.\u00a0 One by one families\u00a0were called up to place their ornament.\u00a0 It was a moving tribute.\u00a0<\/p>\n

When I was piecing the video together yesterday, I couldn\u2019t help but think of these people.<\/p>\n

A relative of mine commented to me after\u00a0mass about how they wish their parish felt like a family like it does at St. Adalbert\u2019s.\u00a0 Those words keep coming back to me as I key this post into my computer.\u00a0\u00a0If St. Adalbert\u2019s does close, not only will we lose a building\u2026we will lose a family.
