Buffalo, New York \u2013 Corpus Christi Church is once again looking for Buffalo\u2019s best pierogi. \u00a0This historic east side church is hosting its fifth annual Buffalo\u2019s Best Pierogi<\/em> contest on Saturday August 18 at 4:30p.m. The contest is open to all amateur cooks and businesses.<\/p>\n

The contest has grown from fourteen contestants to last year\u2019s high of thirty-six. Christopher Byrd, the contest organizer, says the event \u201ccaptures Buffalo\u2019s love for food and while celebrating our city\u2019s rich ethnic heritage with recipes and traditions passed on from one generation to the next. It proves that Buffalo is the pierogi capital of America.\u201d<\/p>\n

Applicants will be judged in one of three categories:<\/p>\n

Homemade Traditional \u2013 boiled or fried pierogi filled with cheese, cheese\/potato or kapusta (pickled or fresh cabbage) with or without mushrooms, carrots, etc.<\/p>\n

Homemade Non-Traditional \u2013 open to entrant\u2019s creativity, keeping in mind that a pierog is a stuffed pocket of dough.<\/p>\n

Commercial \u2013 open to any business using a traditional recipe.<\/p>\n

Deadline for entries is Saturday, August 11.<\/p>\n

A group of celebrity judges will determine the winners for the contest.\u00a0 Winners in each category will walk away with the title of Buffalo\u2019s Best Pierogi Maker<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The contest will take place during Corpus Christi\u2019s 33rd annual Do\u017cynki (pronounced Do-ZHIN-kee) Polish Harvest Festival on August 17, 18 and 19.\u00a0 This joyful commemoration, which dates to the middle ages, is the Polish equivalent of America\u2019s Thanksgiving holiday.<\/p>\n
