Public Meeting on Post Office closure 11/29 @ Matt Urban Center

The Broadway Fillmore Station post office is once again on the closing list by the United States Postal Service.

It is almost two years to the day that the office was saved from a previous closure attempt.

Tom Handley, who owns the building where the post office is located, emailed me about the meeting.

On Friday Nov 11 (Veteran’s Day), the Post Office hung notices on their door and interior wall announcing a public meeting to be held on November 29. This notice gave reasons for their decision to close this location (4 pages attached). They also sent out a survey to residents in the area on 11-10-11 (copy attached). As their landlord, I have not been contacted by the Post Office regarding this action.

Here is attached notice from post office (pdf)—>

More from Tom:

The community has been successful so far in keeping this Post Office branch open, but it’s biggest challenge is coming up.  In order to save our post office, we need 200 people to attend this meeting.  Other communities across the country have been successful in keeping their post offices open – but it takes the entire community, and we have to have strong attendance at this meeting.  (We will serve light refreshments.)

Take the time and attend the meeting at the Matt Urban Center on 11/29 at 6:30.   Losing the the post office would be a significant  blow to the neighborhood.

Photos: Trunk or Treat and Halloween Costume Contest at the Broadway Market

What a great weekend I had in the neighborhood!!!

I had the privilege of participating in the Hope Center’s trunk or treat event on Friday evening and emceeing the Broadway Market’s annual Halloween contest on Saturday.

The Hope Center’s trunk or treat event was incredible.  In just one year, the event has nearly tripled in size!!!  It is a testament to the good work the Hope Center does for the neighborhood.  I brought nearly 200 pieces of candy and I ran out! Running the event in the shadow of the Central Terminal makes it special.

Next year, I am going to have to up what I did with my trunk cuz some folks put together some very awesome displays.

The Broadway Market…a totally different experience and a totally different place than the Hope Center.  But equal in its importance to the Broadway-Fillmore community.  The contest gave a lot of kids an opportunity to participate in an event that they wouldn’t be able to if the Market wasn’t there.

I loved both!!!

Trunk-or-Treat for B-F kids on 10/28/2011

Trunk-or-Treat (click on image for full view)

BFA encourages other community organizations and individuals to come out on 10/28/2011 and support the Hope Center by participating in the center’s second annual Trunk-or-Treat in the Central Terminal’s parking lot.

It is simple…decorate your vehicle’s trunk, etc. and pass out candy to neighborhood children.

This is a great way to provide B-F’s kids with a fun and safe way to enjoy Halloween.

Buffalo Rising: Get a Peek at Buffalo’s Best-Kept Secret

(By RaChaCha – BR) At least once a month I read that something is “Buffalo’s Best-Kept Secret.”

Although many organizations, shops, venues (even people!) have been labeled “Buffalo’s Best-Kept Secret,” I think that title should legitimately go to that outstanding yet little-heralded organization, the Matt Urban Center.  And if you know anything about their work, you would likely agree with me.  Yet it’s a title they are eagerly and actively looking to shed.  Not the “best” part, of course — the “secret” part.

A MATTer of Fact

Yesterday morning I attended an hour “tour” of the Matt Urban Center.

The center is doing a series of these of these over the next month inviting the public to find out more about what the center does and what it is all about.

Let’s be honest, do you know what the Matt Urban Center does?  I thought I did…but going to presentation gave me a better understanding of the full scope of everything center does in the neighborhood to make it a better place.

I think it is good for not-for-profit organizations to take the time to do these types of events…it gives people a glimpse of the work they do and a higher appreciation of the impact they have.

If you are available on one of the dates left for the tours, I strongly recommend that you go.
