The Pope has encouraged priests to use the power of the internet to engage people more…
Though I am not a priest, I also think it is important for the Catholic Church to use technology to reach to the masses. Social media like Facebook, Twitter, blogs, etc. are new tools to help spread the word.
I also like experimenting with social media to test its effectiveness in drawing people to events and places.
Saint Adalbert Basilica has close to 700 Facebook fans…I threw out a question on their Facebook page last week asking if we invited their fans to a Sunday Mass, could we get at least 200 of them to show up. It sparked a little interest and with the help of Saint Adalbert’s Charlie Penasack we invited people on Facebook to come to 10:30am Mass on 07/25/10.
I have had mixed results using Facebook for events. Sometimes I get a lot of people who say they will come and then end up with a fraction of that number…other times, it is great success. I guess we will find out on 07/25.
But since you are reading this, you are invited as well…please come!
It would be great to see the Basilica packed. It is a B-F treasure and worthy of a visit.
Mark you calendars!!!!!!!

Corpus Christi Church, located at 199 Clark St. in Buffalo, will celebrate a special Mass on Sunday, April 18 at 8:00a.m. in memory of Polish President Lech Kaczynski, First Lady Maria Kaczynska and 94 other Polish top ranking military, religious leaders and distinguished citizens who perished in an air crash of devastating proportions on April 10 . The disaster was made even more tragic since the purpose of the delegation’s ill-fated flight was to attend the 70th anniversary observances of the Katyn Forest massacres, in which more than 21,000 Polish prisoners were executed by Russian soldiers. The time of the liturgy is planned to coincide with the Polish President’s funeral in Krakow, taking into account the six hour time difference between the Polish city and Buffalo. Corpus Christi arranged a similar Mass in 2005, that was held simultaneous to Pope John Paul II’s memorial service in Rome, Italy.
