Photos: Old Lumen Bearing Co. & Potts Furniture Complex About to Come Down

A few months ago, I posted a piece called “Demolishing Polonia: It is only a matter of time” about the Lumen Bearing Co. complex on Sycamore and Lathrop.  Well, its time has come to be demolished.

As the photos illustrate, everything is in place for the demo to begin.

It is sad.  With a little TLC, the place could have survived time and the wrecking ball.  But after years of neglect, it will go the way like a lot places in the neighborhood.

This factory complex (the old Lumen Bearing Company) located at Sycamore and Lathrop will most likely never be saved.  Frankly, it is past the point of saving.

In the images above, you see what the complex looked like a about 90 years ago and you will see what it looks like now.

There are a lot of buildings around the neighborhood that are slowly but surely fading away…fading past the point of no return.

It literally is just a matter of time before they are demolished and disappear completely.

When I see buildings like this, I wonder how they were set on this path.  I also wonder how we can prevent other buildings from meeting the same fate.

***UPDATE***

I love the building at the front of the old picture of the complex.  All the windows, etc…must have been something to look at back in the day.

Demolishing Polonia Part II

David Torke, owner of the Fix Buffalo blog, mashed up the data provided by the city last week of their upcoming demolitions and Google Maps.  I featured the data in a post here called Demolishing Polonia.

When you look at the demos coming on a map, you get a real sense as to how this really impacts the neighborhood.

Polonia is truly being demolished right before our eyes.

Demolishing Polonia

See this old bakery at Broadway and Krupp, well, it will soon be gone.

I got the info off a list published online in a story by Buffalo News reporter Aaron Besecker.

The sad part about the article is that most of the properties are in Polonia.  I grabbed the part of the list that shows the scheduled demolitions for B-F.

The scary part is I don’t know if there is any type of method to what is scheduled for demolition.

I do understand that a lot of properties are past the point of no return.  But is there a plan or strategy as to what buildings go the way of the wrecking ball?

To me, I am surprised at what gets demolished sometimes and equally surprised at what doesn’t and what probably should be.
