AM-POL Eagle: Common Council president Franczyk seeks to have county reopen Matt Gajewski Center

Caught this interesting bit in the AM-POL Eagle about Buffalo Common Council President and Fillmore District Council rep, David Franczyk in relation to County Executive-Elect, Mark Poloncarz :
Getting back to the new county executive, one of the first things the council president would like Poloncarz to do is reopen the Dr. Matthew Gajewski Health Clinic at 1500 Broadway.
You can run government in a business like manner, but you can’t run government like a business as Chris Collins promised, Franczyk said. Private businesses exist to make a profit. Government exists to provide services to people. If you take the people’s money in taxes and then put it in a bank account like a business would do rather than cutting taxes or providing services to people, voters are not going to be happy. The Matthew Gajewski Clinic was named after a great Polish-American humanitarian. It wasn’t costing the county anything, since all of its expenses were reimbursable by the state. It should be reopened to serve the health needs of the surrounding community.

I would also like to see it reopen. With the high cost of healthcare, a health clinic like this is an invaluable service to a community where seniors and others struggle to make ends meet. People shouldn’t have to worry if they can afford to receive medical services.
I encourage you to contact his transition about this issue or others pertaining to Erie County—>
David Franczyk wins primary for Fillmore District Council seat
David Franczyk will be returning the the council chambers at city hall come 01/01/2012 by defeating challenger Samuel A. Herbert by a tally of 874 to 561 in Tuesday night’s Democrat primary race.
When the general election comes along in November, he will run unopposed for the seat because he has the endorsements of the Republican, Conservative, Democrat and Working Families parties.
Franczyk first became the Fillmore District Councilman 1986 and has served as Common Council President since 2004.
AM-POL Eagle, Franczyk on Broadway Market: Blame Brown

Michael Mroziak • Thu, Aug 18, 2011: Buffalo’s Common Council President says there’s one person who is to blame for the Broadway Market’s continued operation without a dedicated full-time director. That person, says David Franczyk, is Mayor Byron Brown.
“We’ve given him every opportunity to move forward on the Broadway Market and he’s doing absolutely nothing, dragging his feet,” said Franczyk in a telephone interview with the Am-Pol Eagle.
Last week, the Am-Pol Eagle published a story featuring comments from vendors concerned about the continued lack of an executive director. Franczyk was contacted for an interview but after several traded phone messages, both sides were finally able to correspond but not until after last week’s press deadline.
“I think that’s the biggest problem right now because the Common Council has no authority to pick an executive director. For some reason, he doesn’t think it’s a priority. Everything else to him is a priority,” said Franczyk. “Even when we got the million dollars two years ago for the Market, I got it out of him kicking and screaming. He wanted to trade it for another project in the Masten District which I was going to support anyway.”
AM-POL Eagle: Franczyk defends the Market as essential to Broadway-Fillmore
(Christina Abt/Am-Pol Eagle) Buffalo Common Council President David Franczyk has worked as a government leader for over 24 years. Yet in reviewing his lifelong profession, it’s clear this politico holds a special passion for the Broadway Market and its neighborhood where he lives and serves.
“A Franczyk has served the Fillmore District since the 1940s, when my father was elected to the city council,” Franczyk said. “I still remember going to the market with my father and all the vendors and crowds of shoppers. That’s why throughout my political career, I have supported it. I want it to be great and beautiful again. When it comes to the Broadway Market, that’s all I care about.”
While Franczyk’s support of the market is founded on personal experience, he has expanded his market expertise by traveling to public markets throughout the United States. He particularly notes the Detroit and Cleveland public markets, set in locales and facing challenges similar to the Queen City. In discussing the public market business model, this city leader reflects on sustainability.
AM-POL Eagle: Franczyk reflects on his career at fundraiser

(By Glenn Gramigna) As Buffalo Common Council President Dave Franczyk looked out on his highly successful Erie Basin Marina fundraiser recently, he reflected on an almost 20 year career in public life that has been based on a foundation of fundamental principles. While it’s true that Franczyk’s wind blown mid June event had attracted its share of WNY political notables including County Democratic Chairman Len Lenihan, fellow Common Council Members Michael Kearns, Dave Rivera, Rich Fontana, and Mike LoCurto, County Elections Commissioner Dennis Ward, Buffalo City Court Judge Debra Givens, state senate candidate Mike Kuzma, and others, the Fillmore District Council Member wasn’t thinking about them as he searched for the roots of his long political career.
“I think it really goes back to my father, Stan Franczyk who had a long career in public service,” he recalled. “He taught me that public service is an honorable profession. As long as you are honest, you have nothing to worry about. I’ve always believed that the key to being in public life is to come to work every day to do your job and to always keep your attention on serving the people. That’s why I love this job, because it gives me the opportunity to serve the people of the Fillmore District and the City of Buffalo every single day. Sometimes people ask me why I’ve stayed in public life so long. That’s the answer.”
Buffalo’s most famous retail address…waiting

Waiting…
That is exactly what 998 Broadway has been doing since K-Mart closed its doors in 2002.
A number of potential deals have fallen through for the site of the former Sattler’s over time. In recent years, there were two big almosts for 998. In 2009, True Bethel Baptist Church was close to transforming the site into a multi-purpose facility and in 2007, the Buffalo Public Schools was close to converting 998 into its new alternative school.
The building and the property have been on my mind lately. As 998 remains dormant, it leaves a big whole on Broadway and in the Broadway-Fillmore business district.
I contacted real estate agent Bob Biniszkiewicz from Pyramid Brokerage who actively markets the property. He indicated that the building receives a number of inquiries that range from light industrial to retail use. Biniszkiewicz thinks the likelihood of seeing something along the lines of the a non retail use is probably the most realistic option for 998. Read More →
Video: Buffalo Central Terminal 1992 Part II
This is the second video from 1992…we posted the other few weeks ago.
In the second part, David Franczyk calls out the owner at time Thomas Telesco for stripping the Terminal…very interesting archival stuff which gives you a glimpse at what happened to BCT during his time as owner…both fascinating and sad.
